Descripción:Here are three clips from this splendid film about a Bombay street child. In the first we see the hero, young Krishna, working for a circus. He is sent on an errand by the owner. When he returns the circus has left without him. He travels to Bombay, joins a group of street children and becomes a "chaipau", a tea boy. In the second clip we see him with a prostitute who befriends him and her daughter, who has a crush on him (watch for her charming wink). In the final clip we see Krishna getting stoned in a graveyard with another friend from the streets, the drug addict Chillum.
This is an incredible film and if you haven't seen it you should make a point of getting hold of a copy. The story of this street child, interwoven with the stories of the other street people presents a magnificent tapestry of life at the bottom in Bombay and is a genuine tragedy. The street children in the film are real street children that director Mira Nair recruited through drama workshops she held with them. Shafiq Syed's stellar performance in the lead role won him the Indian equivalent of an Oscar for best performance by child.
Proceeds from the film went towards the founding of the Salaam Baalak Trust that has helped thousands of Indian street children over the years since the film's release. Visit their website at http://salaamstreetkids.org/
The dvd is in Hindi with English subtitles (not, unfortunately, available in these clips.)

Descripción:In this opening scene from the film, "Ali Zaoua," we meet the the four Moroccan street children who are the main characters in this film: Ali Zaoua, Kwita, Boubker and Omar. In a conflict with gang leader, Dib, Ali is killed and his three friends are left with the problem of how to bury him.
Real Casablanca street children ("chemkaras") play the lead roles and these kids perform magnificently. As they try to deal with the death of their leader and friend and attempt to find a way to bury him fittingly, their life in the streets and their characters are revealed with sensitivity, depth and gritty realism. These kids have lived hard lives and it shows on their faces and in their eyes and is reflected in their sincere and memorable performances.
The four children who star in this film are: Mounim Kbab, Mustapha Hansali, Hicham Moussone and Adbalhak Zhayra.
Brilliantly directed by Nabil Ayouch, this film surely ranks with "Pixote" and "Salaam Bombay" in its realistic portrayal of street children and deserves to be more widely known.

Descripción:This is certainly the finest film ever made about street children and a great film by any criteria. Directed by Hector Babenco and starring Fernando Ramos da Silva, this film is the acknowledged inspiration that led Gregory Smith to Sao Paulo to found his innovative and splendidly successful Hummingbird program for street children. And it has inspired many others to work on behalf of street children, including myself.

I browse images of street children once in a while. Also, we've been thinking of starting a foundation for them but we just don't know when or how to start. We think of going back home to the Philippines so that we could try to help the poor. We also have bills, mortgage to pay and daughters to feed, but at the same time, we really want to help those kids from the Philippines. Please, let us do something about it!
